STA Governance

Currently Sports Therapy, Sports Massage and Sports Rehabilitation are unregulated professions.
There is no lead body or council for Sports Therapy or Sports Rehabilitation.

Sports Massage and other Soft Tissue Therapies has an overarching Lead Council

The Professional Standards Authority; (Oversees the Regulators)

“We help to protect the public through our work with organisations that register and regulate people working in health and social care.”

The Professional Standards Authority

is here to protect the public and help ensure their health and wellbeing.

We assess organisations that register health and social care practitioners who are not regulated by law so that you can choose a practitioner to meet your needs with confidence.

The British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers

BASRaT is the UK regulator and professional association for Sport Rehabilitators and an advocate of improving health through Physical Activity.

STA respect the work being carried out by our Colleagues at BASRaT to increase awareness and employability for their registrants and members thought their regulatory work.

The Complementary Natural Healthcare Council

CNHC is a voluntary register for complementary healthcare practitioners that was set up in 2008 with government funding and support. Our key purpose is to protect the public.

(Unlike BASRaT, The CNHC is not a membership association and therefore after paying a fee, you become a registrant, you do not receive any member benefits)

Currently STA do not support or recommend joining this register as we have concerns about having to pay a fee through another professional association to have your qualification verified. STA have made representation and await a response

We therefore now advise all STA members to carry out their own extensive research into the potential benefits of joining an individual register or multiple registers.

We do not currently support any of the claims made by one of the registers that increased employability or increased client numbers are being achieved as a result of joining a register but acknowledge an increased acceptance by “cash back” insurance companies for clients to reclaim treatment expenses.

We will continue to explore all avenues in membership representation, registration and regulation, we will inform you all when there is a viable alternative.
